Studying with Technology for the BCBA® Exam

Are you getting in the groove to start your studies to take the BCBA® Exam?  It can be daunting if you are by yourself and that’s where studying with technology come to play…

I would be lying if I claimed to be “tech-savvy” or tried to flaunt social media fluency. Although I’ve used the internet for roughly 17 years, have had a Facebook profile for a decade, and have owned a smart phone for 5 years, I still feel like I am only scratching the surface of my technological potential. Therefore, when I began studying for my BCBA® Exam I was amazed at all the resources available to me. Various mock exams, study manuals, visuals, Facebook pages, and modules splashed across my computer screen on a daily basis. It became increasingly difficult to choose because I didn’t know which way of studying would benefit me most. Nonetheless, I learned that I preferred it when I have a sense of human connection. Yes, human connection! If you remember my last blog, I credit a large part of my success in passing to the community I built around me, Sheena, whom I met through an online study group, and my husband.

Contrary to popular belief, I learned through experience that technology can enrich and transform an experience that feels isolated into one of connectedness. Through technology I was reminded that I was not alone in this struggle.  Others also shared the difficulty of balancing work and health while holding on to a daily dose of sanity needed to keep from lashing out in a sleep-deprived frenzy. I learned through these available tools that this experience can be more than tolerable, but truly enjoyable. Therefore, in the service of that human connection I want to leverage my study experience and now of being a BCBA to illustrate some effective studying tools that are made available to you through our current state of technology. Which leads me to one of my values as a BCBA: pursuit of excellence. In the words of Jon Bailey and Mary Burch, “Behavior analysis is a rapidly growing field. Behavior analysts need to stay current with new developments as well as constantly updated rules and regulations. Excellence in this profession means being aware of the latest research in the field and in your specialty and incorporating the most up-to-date methods and procedures in your practice of behavior analysis.”

While many of us often think about this in terms of behavioral technology, I feel that it can also apply to leveraging the up-to-date informational technology as well.  So I want to share some quality study materials which aim to teach, encourage, and challenge you in the field of ABA. While there are numerous prep materials available on the internet, Rogue focuses heavily on leveraging informational technology to craft excellent tools while still celebrating your individuality. Remember the community I discussed earlier? Rogue provides you with the online tools to develop a professional community aimed at helping you pass the BCBA exam. Consequently, I find it fitting to share a list these study tools with you. Rogue offers the following:

  1. Free 30-minute zooms
  2. Special Topic 60-minute zooms
  3. Graphic Organizers
  4. Formula Workbooks
  5. 1:1 Tutoring
  6. Small Group Tutoring
  7. 4-Week Course Prep
  8. Flashcards
  9. Audio files

Note: For further information on these topics, review the Rogue ABA Shopify Page.

Again, I would be lying if I said I was “tech-savvy.” Therefore, don’t let the idea of technology scare you, but let excellence and the Rogue community propel you to a journey of studying that you may truly enjoy.

Best wishes,

Hannah Nurnberger, MA, BCBA
